Psychotropic Medication Use Among
Children and Youth in Care

In this free National Resource Center for Permanency and Family Connections (NRCPFC) webcast, Dr. Gerald Mallon, NRCPFC Executive Director, will talk with Dr. Christopher Bellonci about psychotropic medication use among children and youth in care. This webcast will compliment past NRCPFC and National Technical Assistance Center for Children’s Mental Health events, and will discuss best practices regarding use, and oversight and monitoring of use, of psychotropic medications by children/youth in foster care, as well as the impact of the Fostering Connections Act. This webcast will focus primarily on the role of child welfare staff in working with prescribers of medications, foster parents, birth parents, and children/youth in care.
Presenter:
Dr. Christopher Bellonci is a Board-Certified Child/Adolescent and Adult Psychiatrist and Assistant Professor at Tufts University School of Medicine. He has served on the Mental Health Advisory Board of the Child Welfare League for over a decade and is the President-Elect of the American Association of Children’s Residential Centers. Dr. Bellonci has consulted to the Department of Children’s Services in Tennessee in support of their efforts to decrease seclusion and restraint and better monitor the use of psychotropic medications for children in care. Dr. Bellonci co-authored the Practice Parameter on The Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behavior in Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Institutions with Special Reference to Seclusion and Restraint for the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP). Dr. Bellonci is a member of AACAP’s Workgroup on Quality Issues which is responsible for writing the practice parameters that define the standards of care for the field of child psychiatry. In 2008, Dr. Bellonci provided testimony to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and Labor regarding unlicensed and unregulated boot camps and wilderness programs as well as the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support regarding the increasing use of psychotropic medications for children in the Child Welfare System.
